An oil spill that leaked into the Nile in the Aswan governorate on Monday has been contained, according to the Aswan governor's secretary Mohamed Mostafa
The spill had extended 1 km long and 50 meters wide before the police and local authorities were able to stop the spread.
"Once concerned authorities discovered the oil spill, which came from an unknown source, specialized teams headed to the area to manage it," said Mostafa.
The teams extracted the oil from the water using equipment from the Anti-Pollution Center before it could reach Gaafra Village, 30 km from Aswan City, he added.
Samples of water have been taken from areas near the spill and analyzed to ensure it is safe to be used for drinking water.
