Officials accused of exploiting state-funded healthcare

A number of MPs and their supporters conspired with six officials at private hospitals to exploit state-funded healthcare, a report by the Public Funds Prosecution has revealed.

According to the report, the officials intercepted more than LE80 million originally allocated by the Ministry of Health to state-funded healthcare.

An MP from the National Democratic Party in Beheira is said to have obtained 23 approvals for state-funded healthcare in one week. The funds allocated to those approvals, which totaled LE312,000, were instead directed to two private hospitals.

Another MP allegedly obtained ten similar approvals for ten members, including some of his own family, totaling LE117,000.

According to the report, a number of patients have alleged that secretaries of several MPs asked for bribes before submitting the patients’ cases. The same patients asserted that, following the transaction, they never heard from secretaries and the MPs in question denied any knowledge of the incident.

The report further implicated supporters of MPs, employees at the Ministry of Health, judges, lawyers, and policemen.

So far investigations have not proven the involvement of any party. The Supreme Public Funds Prosecution is expected to reveal more details today.
