Official: Govt prepares bill to regulate e-commerce

Chairman of the e-tourism Chamber Mostafa Sultan said Ramy Khaled, the Tourism Minister, asked the Chamber to submit a draft of a proposed law to regulate transactions over the Internet.

World Tourism Organization statistics indicate that 40 percent of travelers around the world use the Internet to organize trips, and the existence of legislation to protect dealers across the network will help increase inbound tourism rates, Sultan added.

This law has existed in Dubai since 2007 and has had a significant impact on its economy, as it helped Dubai enter the digital economy, Sultan mentioned.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi recently stressed the need to rely on imagination and creativity to solve problems, which is in line with what the younger generation believes.

A team is currently working on the completion of the draft law so that it will be ready for the opening of the new Suez Canal, particularly considering the Suez Canal project will involve electronic deals. The project will activate e-commerce, which will in turn need legislation to regulate it, said Sultan.

The bill will go through several stages, including its discussion with technology experts and law scholars, and will then be put to a social dialogue before being approved, Sultan said.
