MONROVIA, Liberia – International and local election observers said Liberia's presidential election was peaceful and there were no reported serious breaches in voting.
On Tuesday, Liberians cast their votes in only the second postwar election in this West African nation shattered by a 14-year civil war. They were choosing whether to re-elect President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to a second term, or give a chance to one of 15 opposition candidates.
Chairman of the Liberian National Elections Commission James Fromoyan told a news conference late Tuesday that "the day was peaceful and calm." His observations were echoed by the head of the 150-member Economic Community of West Africa delegation Attahiru Jega.
Fromoyan said the first preliminary results will be announced on Thursday.
