US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that the relationship with Egypt is based on the security interests of the peace treaty with Israel and on joint efforts to combat terrorism.
Outlining his foreign policy to cadets of the New York Military Academy, Obama said Washington will have contacts with the new government in Egypt and will continue to request reforms.
Defending American foreign policy, he said that he who thinks world leadership slipped either did not read history well or is engaged in partisan politics.
On the fight against terrorism, he said that he has funded US$5 billion to train forces in Yemen to face al-Qaeda, others in Somalia to maintain peace and others to protect the border in Libya.
He said the United States ended the war in Iraq and is preparing to end the war in Afghanistan later this year after having eliminated leaders of Al-Qaeda, but said the United States would use unilateral military force if its citizens are threatened.
