The Salafi Nour Party decided not to participate in a demonstration planned for Friday called for by other Islamists, saying it hoped to avoid violence and chaos.
The Jama’a al-Islamiya’s Construction and Development Party had called on Islamists to stage mass demonstrations at Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque in Nasr City to show support for President Mohamed Morsy.
Nour Party Assistant President Amr Mekky stressed the party’s commitment to national dialogue and truce between all political groups to reach a national consensus and end the state of polarization that is prevailing in the country, which it said could lead to a civil war.
Following days of unrest since marking the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, nearly 60 people have died since 25 January.
Protesters accuse Morsy and the Muslim Brotherhood of holding too much power. The Brotherhood and its supporters think the opposition seeks to remove from power the country’s first democratically elected leader.
Mekky said the party is committed to the National Honor Charter that was pledged to the Al-Azhar initiative, renouncing violence and promoting dialogue. He warned that demonstrations would lead to economic and political deterioration.
Party Secretary General Galal al-Morra, meanwhile warned of using the demonstration for spreading chaos and instability in the country.
