Hundreds of notary employees across Egypt went on strike Tuesday to demand an increase in bonuses and incentives and improved work conditions.
They say the employees of the Justice Ministry received raises up to 200 percent and those of the Forensics Department 100 percent while they did not receive raises, although they work in difficult conditions.
The strike began on Monday, with workers from Luxor, Daqahlia, Ismailia, Fayoum, Beheira, Monufiya, Red Sea and Cairo joining Tuesday.
The employees have staged several strikes nationwide since last year demanding also that their institution be independent from the Justice Ministry.
After a nationwide strike in August 2011, the justice minister at that time, Mohamed Abdel Aziz al-Guindi, agreed to employee demands and gave preliminary approval for the notary offices to become independent from the ministry.
The agreement never went into effect and the employees went on strike again in March.
