The National Council for Women (NCW) announced Sunday that it has not received any reports of sexual harassment during Eid al-Fitr holiday, which started on Wednesday and continues throughout Sunday.
The council on Wednesday allocated an operations room and hotline 15115 to receive and monitor any complaints of harassment that women may be exposed to during Eid al-Fitr.
National holidays in Egypt have seen spikes in harassment for years.
In 2014, sexual harassment was finally criminalized in Egypt after approving a law punishes harassers with imprisonment of no less than six months, and/or fines of LE3,000 to LE5,000.
The Director General of the NCW’s Women’s Complaints Office Amal Abdel Moneim explained that the operations room did not receive any complaints of harassment incidents, but received inquiries regarding personal status issues, domestic violence, and inheritance issues.
