“Participation in the new health insurance program will be mandatory for all citizens,” Deputy Finance Minister Mohamed Moeit declared at the First Regional Medical Insurance and Health Care Forum on Sunday.
“The ministry will soon present the terms of the new program to parliament for approval,” he added.
Assistant Health Minister Nasser Rasmy explained that the new program's first phase would cost the state some LE7 billion. “But the government is not planning to levy any new taxes for this,” he said.
Rasmy declined to reply to a question on whether the government intended to gradually abolish the current program for state-funded medical treatment.
“All I can say is that the government is committed to providing vaccines, fighting epidemics and supporting preventive medicine,” he said.
