New appointment to Radio and Television Union may mean changes

Tareq al-Mahdi, currently in charge of the National Council for Media, assumed his responsibilities on Thursday and Friday as a member of the board of trustees of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU), ERTU sources said.

Al-Mahdi is awaiting an official announcement of his appointment, the sources added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The sources added that over the past two days, Mahdi held meetings with Sami Saeed, first deputy for the Ministry of Information, and Ahmed Shawqi, head of the economic sector, to examine the new financial regulations for ERTU.

The three officials agreed to develop the content of programs, TV series and talk shows, the sources added.

The three also agreed to look at the possibility of launching an official TV channel to speak in the name of the state and to transform the NTN TV network into a revenue-generating holding company.

Meanwhile, Hafez al-Merazi, a media professional, accused Mahdi of delaying the broadcast of his new TV show "Betawqeet al-Kahira" (Cairo Local Time). A TV source said broadcast has been put off due to financial problems with the producer, but not canceled.
