Netanyahu sends Israeli diplomatic team to Cairo

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday announced that a diplomatic negotiation team will be sent to Cairo, on Monday.

A statement from Netanyahu’s office said that the Israeli delegation will discuss continuing to implement the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The sixth batch of the first phase of the Gaza agreement concluded on Saturday, with Hamas and Islamic Jihad handing over three Israeli detainees, and Israel releasing 369 Palestinian prisoners.

Since the ceasefire went into effect, 19 Israeli detainees and five Thai workers have been released in exchange for more than 1,100 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, including dozens of prisoners serving life sentences.

Thirty-three Israeli detainees, at least eight of whom were killed, were agreed to be released during the first phase of the ceasefire that began on January 19 and will last for 42 days, in exchange for Israel releasing 1,900 Palestinian prisoners from its jails.

The negotiations on the second phase of the agreement were supposed to begin on February 3, but Netanyahu sent a delegation without powers to Doha after a delay.
