NCW chairman: 51% of master’s and doctorate degrees holders women

The statistics of the National Council for Women (NCW) show that women make up 51 percent of the master's and doctoral degrees in Egypt, said NCW Chairman Mervat al-Tallawy.

Women account for 85 percent of the staff of five pharmaceutical companies in Egypt, and a woman has held the post of president of the state TV Union for three consecutive terms of office, Tallawy added during her meeting with Denis Bauchard, France's former ambassador to Jordan and Canada Monday.

Women in Egypt, however, still face challenges, including high illiteracy and poverty, she said.

Tallawy stressed during the meeting, according to a statement by the NCW, that the Constitution of 2012 under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood completely ignored women and confined them to the role of a mother, and ignored reference to the international treaties and conventions ratified by Egypt in this regard.

Tallawy accused the Muslim Brotherhood of circulating erroneous religious messages, attempting to rollback all the gains made for women's rights in Egypt, such as lowering the age of child custody, Khul' divorce, criminalization of female genital mutilation and lowering the age of marriage
