A National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) preliminary report on the condition of those detained in the Abbasseya clashes last week has said they were tortured by military police.
NCHR sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the report, which was written after an NCHR committee's visit to the detainees in Tora Prison, included "unspeakable violations" of the detainees by military police.
One of the NCHR visitors to Tora, Nasser Amin, said that the prisoners complained of torture at the hands of two police officers in particular, describing the resulting injuries as "brutal and cruel."
They said the detainees were treated well in the prison, however.
The NCHR will publish the report for discussion and submit recommendations to the ruling military council and the relevant authorities.
Twelve people died and hundreds were wounded last week when protests over the army's handling of Egypt's troubled transition from military rule to civilian government turned violent.
The NCHR called an urgent meeting last Sunday, which ended with a statement denouncing assaults on the Defense Ministry headquarters as a "dangerous escalation threatening the state of law." It also condemned the killing of eleven people by other civilians, adding that despite evidence identifying the perpetrators, they remain at large.
