Natural gas station in Sinai hit by RPGs

A natural gas station in North Sinai on Saturday was hit by rocket-propelled grenades fired by unknown armed men, North Sinai Security head Saleh al-Masry said.

In a statement to the press, Masry said the station, located in Sheikh Zowayed, was also the target of an earlier attack, but it had been empty of natural gas at the time.

Eyewitnesses said the armed men looked the same as those who attacked a police station in Arish Friday. They were reportedly wearing black clothes, raising a black flag and driving white sport utility vehicles.

Security officials have said they suspect that the police station attackers were members of an extremist religious group.

The gas pipeline in Sinai has been bombed four times in less than four months, twice in July. These blasts have cut off exports to Israel and other consumers.

An official source said negotiations between Egypt and Israel to raise prices of natural gas exports are currently frozen because of the blasts.
