The National Coalition announced its demands, foremost of which is the fall of Ahmed Shafiq’s government, in a press conference at Wafd Party headquarters on Wednesday.
The coalition includes the Wafd Party, the Nasserist Party, the Tagammu Party, the newly founded al-Wasat Party, the Muslim Brotherhood group and some youth representatives.
Ministerial changes announced on Tuesday that bring new opposition figures to the cabinet failed to satisfy the coalition which considers the government part of the fallen regime.
The coalition calls for the formation of a technocratic government during the transitional period.
The coalition also said that the constitutional amendments underway do not nullify the need for a new constitution that allows for a parliamentary state.
It also demands the dismantling of the state security apparatus, the ending of the state of emergency and the release of all political prisoners.
Moreover, the coalition demands the dismantling of the National Democratic Party and of local councils it deems hotbeds of corruption. It also asks for a speedy trial of figures charged with corruption.
The coalition also demands the amendment of the political participation law and demands freedom to create parties during the transitional period.
The coalition expressed its support for the uprising in Libya and other Arab Countries, condemning Libyan President Qadhafi’s crimes against his people and demanding that Egypt’s government work to return home Egyptians stranded in Libya as soon as possible.
The coalition announced that it will continue to meet in order to “end the plans of [those wishing to stage] a counter revolution.”
The coalition shares similar goals with those who are planning another protest in Cairo’s Tahrir Square next Friday.
