National Bank of Egypt denies reports of coronavirus outbreak among employees

The National Bank of Egypt has denied reports made by some news and social media websites alleging that the bank closed 13 branches due to a coronavirus outbreak among its employees.

The bank stated that it pursues the highest standards of transparency with its customers, and that it takes all necessary precautions in its branches per the directives of the Central Bank of Egypt and the Egyptian government’s plan to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The bank added: “If there are any developments, we will officially announce them.”

Coronavirus cases in Egypt reached 17,967 as of Tuesday, out of whom 783 died and 4,900 others fully recovered.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on May 18 announced that from Sunday, May 24 to Friday, May 29 more restrictions will be put in place to limit the spread of coronavirus nationwide.

Madbouly outlined that all shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and public beaches will be closed, with a curfew from 5 pm until 6 am daily.

All public transportation between governorates are frozen during this period.

After May 29, the curfew will be in effect from 8 pm until 6 am.

Precautionary measures to coexist with the coronavirus will remain in place even after life returns to normal, Madbouly added, the most important of which is wearing face masks in public.

Madbouly has also announced that life in Egypt will begin to return back to normal by mid-June, with some of the restrictions currently in place to be lifted.
