The National Association for Change (NAC) has called on the Arab League to take a more positive stance toward the Syrian uprising and to register more strongly its opposition to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
The NAC, which is presided over by prospective presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei, also said that Assad had been attempting to undermine the uprising by claiming that it has been orchestrated by foreign forces.
In a statement on Thursday, the NAC said that it has been watching the “organized crime committed by al-Assad against his people, who have revolted against injustice and corruption, seeking freedom.”
The statement described Assad’s attacks on unarmed people as a “war crime” requiring that he be put on trail as an example for any tyrant who belittles his people’s desire for freedom and dignity.
The statement added that the Syrian regime uses the same excuses that were used by Mubarak, Qadhafi and Saleh, and that such excuses didn’t protect them from the people’s anger.
According to news reports, Arab countries have failed to reach a decision on suspending Syria’s membership of the Arab League, a fact that stands in sharp contrast to the general condemnation of Qadhafi after the start of the Libyan uprising.
News reports have also suggested that discussions have taken place between Arab nations on the question of whether to suspend Syria’s membership. However, other reports have suggested that such discussions have not been officially sanctioned.
