The Political Parties' Affairs Committee on Monday approved the establishment of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.
It now has official permission to carry out political activities, which had been illegal since the group was banned in 1954.
Mohamed Saad al-Katatny, a leader and spokesperson from the group, submitted a letter to the committee on 18 May to notify it of the establishment of the party.
The Freedom and Justice Party is the second party, after the Wasat Party, to receive official approval to engage in political activity since the 25 January revolution.
