The Court of Cassation reversed death sentences of seven suspects in the Ezbet el-Kallafeen killings in Benha. The suspects were arrested under charges of murdering 12 persons and injuring 30 others during a gun dispute between the families of the suspects
The court rulings had also imposed a life sentence on four other suspects, a sentence of 15 years of imprisonment on five other suspects, as well as sentencing one suspect–Ibn el-Barbari–to ten years in prison, two of el-Barbari’s relatives to five years, and three others to two years in prison.
The suspects were referred to the Criminal Court following the bloody incidents in Ezbet el-Kallafeen. They were charged with willful murder, unauthorized possession of weapons and the intimidation of citizens. The public prosecution had called for the imposition of the severest penalty on the suspects who are said to have turned the area into a war scene.
The suspects will be retried by a different criminal circuit.
