Mubarak trial updates: Judge merges Mubarak and Adly cases, adjourned until 5 Sept.

1:00: Refaat announces that to the trial will not be broadcast on television again when the case resumes on 5 September "in order to maintain the public interest."

The judge also announces that he will register the demands of the lawyers of the defendants and the lawyers' representing the martyrs' families. Lawyers for the plaintiffs will have access to evidence for the Mubarak-Adly case and lawyers for the defendants will be granted access to the evidence against Mubarak. Lawyers of the defendants will also receive the documents they have requested from the Administrative Monitoring Authority, in addition to the Ambulance Authority's records from 25 January to 31 January.

12:56: Judge Ahmed Refaat returns and announces that he will join the cases of Mubarak and former Interior Minister Adly together on charges of conspiracy to murder. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs erupt in applause. Refaat did not mention the request to separate the corruption and murder charges.

12:35: The court is still in recess, but Mubarak and his sons have returned to the defendants' cage.

11:14: About 100 pro-Mubarak protesters are gathered outside of the Police Academy where the trial is being held. Only a few dozen pro-revolution protesters oppose them. There were clashes earlier that were dispersed by Central Security Forces. At least one person was injured.

11:09: Farid al-Deeb, the laywer heading Mubarak's defense team, presents his demands: 1) to see a report from the Administrative Monitoring Authority investigation into the acquistion of villas for which Mubarak is accused of profiteering; 2) for the Ambulance Authority to present all reports regarding names of those transferred who died and were injured on the dates for which Mubarak and Adly are accused of murder; 3) a photocopy of all documents that allegedly support the prosecutor’s claims; 4) minutes of the trial; 5) adjournment of the case to give the defense team enough time to study the evidence they are demanding.

The judge then adjourned the case for a recess.

11:01: The judge assures lawyers representing the families of the martyrs that all of their demands will be considered, but requests that they be submitted in writing to avoid redundancy. After the Mubarak trial began on 3 August, many observers raised questions about the competence of the lawyers representing the civil claims of the martyrs' families and many commented on the level of disorder in the courtroom. The lawyers declined to designate a single lawyer to speak on behalf of all the martyr's families.

10:55: Justice Refaat reviews the material serving as evidence.

10:52: Amid noise in the courtroom, the judge says, "We wanted to hold the case on a daily basis but it became impossible because of lack of order. The list of lawyers demanding to speak has exceeded 100 names. We won’t continue the trial unless order and silence are restored."

10:50: Lawyers begin presenting demands. Lawyers representing the martyrs' families request that the corruption charges against Mubarak be separated from the charges of conspiracy to kill protesters. That trial should be joined with that of former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, the lawyers request. A lawyer says he fears that simultaneously trying the former president on both corruption and murder charges could slow down the trial.

10:45: The presiding judge, Ahmed Refaat, arrives in the courtroom and calls the defendants. Mubarak and his two sons all reply, "Present."

10:20: Mubarak and his sons are inside the defendants' cage. The former president appears to have an IV in his left hand.

10:15: Mubarak is wheeled out of an ambulance in a hospital bed and brought into the courtroom. He is not wearing the white uniform of an accused prisoner. His son Alaa attempts to shield the former president from cameras.

10:06: A plane lands at the Police Academy. State television reports that the plane carries Mubarak, who was flown to the Police Academy from the International Medical Center where he is being hospitalized.

9:45: Clashes erupt between supporters of Mubarak and families of the martyrs, although numbers are fewer than the previous hearing on 3 August. Stones are thrown by both sides. Inside the courtroom, lawyers of the martyrs' families arrive. During the first hearing, only lawyers who had received authorization were allowed to attend the case. Today, any lawyer with syndicate membership is allowed to enter.

9:30: Families of the martyrs arrive to the Police Academy for the second hearing of deposed President Hosni Mubarak and his sons as well as businessman Hussein Salem. Mubarak is accused of killing protesters, squandering public funds and profiteering. Supporters of the deposed president also arrive to the Police Academy and chant against the families of the martyrs. A young Mubarak supporter tells Egyptian state television that putting the former president in a cage tarnishes the country's image. Heavy police guard the area outside the courtroom.
