Mubarak supporters and opponents clash outside trial, injuring dozens

Clashes outside the Police Academy where former President Hosni Mubarak faces trial Wednesday resulted in the injury of 53 people, the Health Ministry said.

The clashes broke out before the trial began Wednesday morning between Mubarak supporters and anti-Mubarak activists.

Assistant Health Minister Abdel Hamid Abaza said the crowd threw stones and empty bottles. He went on to say that 48 of the injured were treated at the site and the others were taken to Ahly Bank Hospital.

Some 400 Mubarak supporters protested outside the Police Academy, while about 200 pro-revolution protesters chanted against Mubarak, demanding he be given the maximum sentence.

The two sides verbally assaulted each other, after which the Mubarak supporters attacked the pro-revolution protesters with belts and stones.

The supporters also raised banners saying “No to the insult of the leader." They chanted “Down, down, with Tahrir” and “We will demolish and burn the prison … if Mubarak is condemned.”
