Major General Mohamed Naguib, assistant interior minister for the prison sector, ordered the transfer of Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, sons of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, from the main prison in the Tora Prison complex to another prison hours after their father was moved to the Maadi Military Hospital.
The transfer came in accordance with the Interior Ministry's February decision to separate former regime members, who were initially being held in the same prison in the complex.
The Mubarak sons were transferred under tight security and placed in separate individual cells after having spent several days inside the prison hospital where their father was receiving treatment.
“The decision to move Alaa and Gamal was enforced on Wednesday morning,” said a security source.
He added that the Mubarak sons were in poor psychological condition and that they had asked about their father’s health after seeing television reports that he was clinically dead following his arrival at the military hospital.
“Alaa and Gamal refused to go out for exercise and insisted upon reading the Qur'an and praying for their father in their cells after they had witnessed the deterioration in his health over the past days,” said the source.
The source added that the Mubarak sons had asked to accompany their father to the military hospital and to stay in the main building in Tora Prison, but both requests were rejected.
Alaa and Gamal are being watched closely for fear that they may attempt to hurt themselves or take their own lives, the source said.
