President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday convened with Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo to discuss reviving moribund Palestinian-Israelis direct peace negotiations.
The talks touched on US, Europe, and Middle East quartet proposals for an Israeli settlement construction freeze.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman attended the talks as well as Palestinian officials Yasser Abd Rabbo and Nabil Shaath.
Abbas arrived in Cairo on Saturday and met with Sulieman and Secretary-General of Arab League Amr Moussa.
Following that meeting, Moussa called for an urgent Arab Peace Initiative Committee summit to discuss the necessary steps to be taken in the wake of an impending US announcement regarding the freeze.
Washington proposes, according to recent media reports, resuming negotiations in exchange for a three-month freeze.
Western diplomatic sources said Washington is mulling a moratorium on new tenders for building housing units in Jerusalem during the three-month period while permitting already-approved construction to continue.
