Mubarak family to cede LE11m in unlawful newspaper gifts

The Supreme Public Funds Prosecution approved a request Tuesday by Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, sons of the former president, to return another LE11 million their family received in the form of expensive gifts from state-owned Al-Akhbar Al-Youm Institution for Journalism.

Judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Gamal, Alaa, their wives and parents were given unlawful gifts paid for by public funds and that funds would be paid from the sons’ frozen bank accounts.

Last month the Public Funds Prosecution approved the return of LE 20 million for illegal gifts the family received from the Al-Ahram Newspaper and Publishing House. The funds were set to be taken from Alaa’s account.

Several other public figures were also implicated in the case, including Zakariya Azmy, the former chief of the president’s office, and Habib al-Adly, the Interior Minister.
