Mubarak arrives at Tora prison after refusing to disembark helicopter

Former President Hosni Mubarak, who was sentenced to 25 years in jail Saturday arrived at Tora Prison Hospital, a few hours after he left the court on a helicopter, MENA reported Saturday.

Some sources said that Mubarak had refused to be extracted from the helicopter upon arrival at the maximum security prison complex from Cairo’s Police Academy, where he was sentenced.

According to MENA and State TV, Mubarak felt suddenly ill when he arrived at the prison, so he had to receive treatment on the helicopter before being transferred to his hospital room.

Mubarak was eventually transferred to a room that contains a number of devices including a respirator, a device to measure heart rate, and others needed to monitor his health condition accurately and on regular basis, MENA said. Tight security measures have been imposed on his room, he said.

Mubarak was previously being held at the International Medical Center. Local and international media reported that the former president was living in comfortable conditions, with regular access to his family and a swimming pool.

A member of the International Medical Center’s staff told Reuters that Mubarak was currently in good health. The president has suffered from poor health in recent years, reportedly dramatically worsening after the left office last February.

In each court hearing, Mubarak has appeared lying on a stretcher.

Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that Mubarak’s companions spent 20 minutes trying to convince him to exit the helicopter.
