The Chairman of the Defense and National Security Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives, Ahmed al-Awady, affirmed Egypt’s support for any decisions and measures taken by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in defense of Palestine, and spoke of Egypt’s increasingly strained relations with Israel.
In a special statement to RT, Awady stressed that the Egyptian government, leadership and people are against any attempts to undermine Egyptian and Arab national security.
He said that Egypt continues its historical humanitarian role to support the rights of Palestinians.
Awady stressed Egypt’s constant emphasis that a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution is the only way to achieve security and sustainable peace for Palestine.
Souring relations with Israel
Egyptian-Israeli relations are going through their most difficult stage in their history, he warned, as a result of Israel’s brutal aggression in Gaza Strip.
Awady noted the false, hostile allegations from the Israeli government and before the International Court of Justice, in a failed attempt to blame negligence on Egypt’s side in bringing aid and relief to Gaza through the Rafah crossing.
Provocative statements
Awady slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s statements about Israel’s inability to end its war against Hamas until the closure of Philadelphia corridor along the border between Egypt and Gaza as provocative and obstructive to the efforts Egypt has made to save the lives of children, women and the injured in the Gaza Strip.
Any Israeli move in this direction would lead to a serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations, he warned, because it violates security agreements signed between both sides.
The Philadelphia corridor is governed by provisions of security and military annex to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, which make the axis a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt, where no militarily actions can be allowed without the approval of Egypt.
Israel cannot modify any part of its presence in that region without Egypt’s full and frank acceptance, he stressed.
