The head of the People’s Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee, Essam al-Erian, won the post of deputy speaker of the Arab Parliament on Wednesday by 48 out of 63 votes.

Algerian Medani al-Baradei became the second deputy of the speaker.

Results were announced during the opening session of the Arab Parliament, which took place on Wednesday at the Arab League. The parliament’s speaker, Ali Salem al-Deqbasi, presided over the session.

Iraqi Mohsen Saadoun and Jordanian Awwad al-Zawaida also ran for the two posts.

The Arab Parliament’s system includes four deputies for the speaker. Qatari Aisha al-Mana’ie and Saudi Saud al-Shamari won the posts of the other two deputies.

The two new members will replace former Egyptian MP Mostafa al-Fiqqi and former Omani MP Nasser al-Me’wali.
