MP claims Israel helped in Sinai rescue ops

Parliament witnessed a heated session Wednesday when MPs debated a report issued by parliament’s human rights committee detailing the committee’s recent visit to flood-stricken areas of the country.

Independent MP Saad Aboud accused the government of jeopardizing Egypt’s national sovereignty, claiming the government had allowed Israeli helicopters to participate in rescue operations in the Sinai Peninsula following torrential rains and flooding last month.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mufid Shehab demanded that Aboud present evidence to support his claim. "At least you could have taken pictures with your mobile phone to prove these preposterous allegations," he said.

MP Nashaat el-Qassas called Aboud an "insolent hypocrite," prompting house speaker Fathi Sorour to refer him to parliament’s disciplinary committee. "We won’t accept any foul language in the chamber," said Sorour.
