Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Sunday welcomed Saudi King Abdallah Bin Abdel Aziz's offer to host talks between Iraqi president Jalal Talabani and other Iraqi leaders under the auspices of the Arab League.
The Saudi King suggested the talks follow the conclusion of the hajj season.
Moussa said the invitation seeks to unify Iraqis and reduce the negative impact of discord in the Iraqi political landscape.
Moussa did not state whether the Arab League has agreed to sponsor the talks. He said, however, that like the Saudi King he will support whatever the Iraqi leaders agree upon.
Moussa said there's a need to continue pursuing Iraqi national reconciliation with the objective of forming a national unity government.
The Saudi invitation is driven by a desire on the part of the Saudi King to help Iraq restore its leading position in the Arab World, the Arab League chief added.
Moussa also said he has received several calls from Iraqi officials and will continue to maintain communication with them.
