Appointing an interim president would not serve the Egyptian people, said presidential hopeful Amr Moussa on Monday. Egyptians have the right to choose a president just as they have the right to choose their Parliament, he said.
In a Monday statement, Sameh Ashour, deputy head of the Advisory Council, urged election of an interim president in response to growing demands that SCAF hand over power to a civilian government.
“Such a proposal aims at extending the transition period and delaying the handover of power, not to mention that it might create chaos,” Moussa told reporters on Monday after he cast his vote in Shura Council elections.
“It’s clear that there are certain forces who want to avoid presidential elections at any cost,” he added. “They are the same forces who proposed a presidential council that is not elected, without considering how and who.”
“And they are the same forces who wanted to extend the transitional period for years, regardless of damage resulting from political and economic instability,” he said.
“The majority of Egyptians would not accept such negative thoughts or abort the march to democracy,” he added.
"As for the constitution, which has become like a ball tossed in a political game, the good thing is that it has been agreed that it will be written and endorsed by stable institutions, and after transparent discussions by a committee that truly represents all currents of society, in order for it to become a solid document able to govern our lives for decades to come.”
