Amr Moussa, chief of the 50-member constitution amendment committee, denied news on withdrawal of the Salafi-oriented Nour Party from the committee.
Moussa expressed hope to accomplish a constitution that ‘deals with Egyptians and handles their issues without discrimination. He denied fears of political rallies against constitution.
In a press conference held by the committee on Sunday at Shura Council for foreign correspondents, Moussa said, “The Nour Party is has not withdrawn from constitution. It’s still participating. Two members were selected by the party two days ago and they will attend the sessions.”
Moussa added, “We are trying to make the constitution a good document that handles Egyptians’ issues without discrimination, considering that this constitution will be ratified. We are in the 21st century. It should consider future issues without neglecting our main principles.”
Moussa denied fears of rallying against constitutional amendments while being put to referendum. “Others can rally against constitution, but we can also rally support toward it. These are the rules of the democracy game,” he said.
In response to question about articles related to the Islamic Sharia and other canons, Moussa said, “The issue of religion mentioned in the second article of constitution was tackled. It’s a main article that deals not only with principles of Sharia for Muslims but also with other religions. The constitution will consider the different religious legislation.”
