Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa on Tuesday called for an "immediate end" to the violence currently being used against anti-government protesters in Libya.
He said that the "time for change had come" in Libya, noting that this change could not be thwarted by violence.
Following a meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini in Cairo, Moussa told reporters that the pan-Arab body would convene an emergency summit in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the unfolding situation in Libya.
Moussa added that league officials had been in contact with Libyan authorities to discuss the evacuation of Arab nationals from the troubled North African nation. He stressed the seriousness of the situation in light of recent reports of mounting violence used against protesters.
Frattini, for his part, said Italy’s stance on the situation in Libya mirrored that of the European Union, adding that his country condemned the Libyan regime's use of violence against innocent civilians.
The Italian FM also expressed concern about the possibility of civil war in Libya, which, he said, could increase illegal Libyan migration to Europe.
