Popular singer Mohamed Mounir expressed his disappointment with authorities for canceling his New Year’s concert, which he has traditionally performed for many years at the Cairo Opera House.
The Interior Ministry requested the cancellation of this year’s concert for security reasons, fearing possible riots by the audience in excess of 50,000 that is expected to attend.
"I am sad for my audience," Mounir said. "I wish the authorities would have notified me earlier. I could have accepted other offers that I had declined in order to give this concert."
In its statement, the Opera House administration said the concert was canceled due to some unfinished construction work, and promised to hold another concert for Mounir once the work is complete.
