Dozens of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate Mohamed Morsy gathered in Tahrir Square after his campaign announced early Monday morning that he was leading the race with 97 percent of votes counted.
Morsy’s campaign said he garnered 52.5 percent of the ballots, while his rival Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister, won 47.5 percent.
A source within the Presidential Elections Commission was quoted by Reuters as saying that the results announced by Morsy’s campaign are close to the commission’s preliminary results.
Supporters in Tahrir raised Egyptian flags and photos of Morsy, while chanting slogans against the ousted regime and in support of the revolution. The celebrations affected traffic on nearby Qasr al-Ainy Street and Qasr al-Nil Bridge.
