Morsy invited to attend African Summit in mid-July

President Mohamed Morsy has received an invitation for the upcoming African Summit, scheduled to be held on 17 July in Addis Ababa.

Yasser Ali, the acting spokesperson for the president, said the invitation is being considered, state TV reported Sunday.

Ali said that as soon as the Morsy’s participation in the summit is confirmed, it will be announced. It would be the first official event Morsy would be invited to as the new president.

The 19th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the African Union was initially scheduled to take place in Lilongwe, Malawi, but Sudan requested that it be held in Ethiopia after Malawi tried to block President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, from attending.

Former President Hosni Mubarak informally boycotted the African Summit after he faced an attack in 26 June 1995, when gunmen attacked his car upon his arrival at the African Summit in Addis Ababa.

He escaped unhurt and returned to Egypt, but did not attend later African Summits.
