Minya train shooter charged with murder

Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has charged the policeman who opened fire on a number of Copts riding a train bound for Cairo with premeditated and attempted murder.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat radio station reported that the public prosecution has decided to keep Amer Ashour, who shot at the passengers, in custody for 15 days pending further investigations.

One passenger died and five others were injured in Tuesday's shooting on train 979 traveling from Assiut.

According to investigations conducted on Wednesday, the suspect said he boarded the train at Samalout, entered a random car and shot indiscriminately at passengers in the front seats.

Ashour said he was annoyed at the time of the shooting and does not know why he committed the act.
