New York is old news – Fashion Week is now headed to London, where the spring/summer 2016 trends are about to hit the city’s catwalks.
This season the stylish extravaganza will take place in SoHo, the UK capital’s vibrant gay neighbourhood, which is practically bursting with creative juices.
In honour of its unique and quintessentially British vibe, the British Fashion Council (BFC) has released a short film featuring World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker reciting a piece called “Vive le Soho Freak!” That should set the tone for the event.
If you haven’t yet received all your front row invitations for the shows then don’t panic as this season LFW is launching its own outdoor cinema and will be livestreaming from the runways. It will also show fashion films and digital presentations from the likes of Hunter and Alexander McQueen.
Another technological development comes courtesy of Topshop and Pinterest, which will be using the new “Pinterest Palettes” concept to offer a shoppable version of LFW as it happens, based on a series of color palettes created using the street style and identity of the city.
BBC iPlayer is also getting involved, covering LFW with a series of three programmes featuring model Abbey Clancy, singer Lianne La Havas and fashion vlogger Grace Victory.
And there will be plenty of bling, with the BFC recently announcing that 10 Rock Vault jewellers will be displaying a selection of their SS16 collections as part of an installation in the Designer Showrooms during the event.
Launched in January 2012, the Rock Vault initiative provides emerging jewellery businesses mentoring and bi-annual showcasing opportunities at London Fashion Week.
The city will be crawling with supermodels but Minnie Mouse is set to get most of the attention, thanks to the BFC and Disney exhibition “Minnie: Style Icon” which runs September 19-20.
Co-curated by model and photographer Georgia May Jagger, the show examines the style icon’s influence through photographs, sketches, celebrity portraits and fashion spreads, dating from the 1930s.
And finally, speaking of style icons, the British fashion house Belstaff is set to premiere its new short film “Outlaws”, produced by Liv Tyler and starring none other than David Beckham, on September 21.
