Ministry prepares amendments to nuclear activity bylaws

The Electricity and Renewable Energy Ministry is preparing amendments to bylaws governing the country’s nuclear energy bodies, government sources have told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The amendments to the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) involve customs exemptions for the components in Egypt’s nuclear stations in Dabaa, the construction of which is expected to begin by the end of 2015.

The sources, who asked not to be named, said wages for NPPA workers will also be amended as part of funding worth between LE10-16 million requested by the electricy ministry from the Finance Ministry.

Egypt froze its plans for nuclear energy generation in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster, but resumed its plans in 2006.

In February, Egypt and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding by which Russia would construct two reactors worth US$5 billion.
