Egypt’s minister of health declared that the victims' toll in the recent Cairo Tahrir Square clashes rose to eight deaths and 900 injuries. Ahmed Farid pointed out in statements to reporters that most of the deaths resulted from assaults with stones, metal bars and clubs.
Clashes took place Wednesday and Thursday between pro-Mubarak protestors and anti-Mubarak protesters. Anti-Mubarak protesters succeeded in repelling repeated attacks by pro-Mubarak protesters aimed at dislodging them from Tahrir Square. Sporadic gun-fire targeted anti-government protesters on Thursday morning.
Protestors were attacked by Molotov cocktails from on top of buildings as gunshots were heard in surrounding areas throughout the night. The Molotov cocktails caused fire to erupt in some of the square’s buildings.
Protestors claimed that police elements in civilian clothes took part in pro-Mubarak protests, as proven by the ID cards they carried.
The claims remained unverified amid Ministry of Interior denials.
Likewise protests took place in Alexandria, Suez and Ismailia governorates.
Vice President, Omar Suleiman called on protesters to return to their homes to ensure restoration of stability to the state.
Anti-Mubarak protestors said that they plan for more protests today, and that they continue preparing a massive protest planned for Friday.
Demonstrations in Egypt entered their tenth consecutive day on Thursday.
