The Interior Ministry said Sunday it has arrested 21,000 people who escaped from prisons during the 25 January revolution two years ago.
The ministry gave credit to intensive campaigns in coordination with the Prison Authority, Central Security Forces and security directorates in different governorates.
Security services had worked on the campaign since the revolution, after reviewing prison documents and listing the names of fugitives during the events.
The ministry is pursuing the rest of the total 24,000 fugitives who had escaped through coordination with security directorates nationwide, it said.
During the first days of the uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, a mass prison break erupted and nearly a quarter of prisoners nationwide escaped. The government has not provided any explanations for the mass breakouts as of today.
