Mubarak regime figures, incarcerated together at Tora Prison, will be relocated to different buildings, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim has said, according to Egyptian state television. He added that they will not be able to gather together in one place.
“Members of Mubarak’s regime imprisoned at Tora will be separated as soon as possible,” state TV quoted Ibrahim as saying on Sunday.
Recently, calls to isolate former regime figures, many of whom are detained at Tora, have increased. Some argue that they are conspiring against the revolution.
On Sunday, MP Fareed Ismail told the private satellite channel Sada al-Balad that the Defense and National Security Committee issued a decision to separate them. According to Ismail, the committee urged the Interior Ministry to immediately execute the decision .
Tora Prison is one of the country’s most famous prisons. The compound, which was built in 1928, consists of seven prison blocks. The Mubarak regime figures are currently held together in the compound's main block, but will be dispersed to separate ones if the ministry executes the separation decision.
Currently, the main block hosts influential figures of Mubarak’s regime, including the former president’s sons Alaa and Gamal, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six of his aides, Fathi Sorour and Safwat al-Sherif, former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, former Tourism Minister Zoheir Garana, former Housing Minister Ahmed al-Maghrabi and business tycoon Ahmed Ezz.
