Minister: ICT sector sees 12% growth in 2010

The information and communication technologies sector grew 12 percent during last year, said Tarek Kamel al-Khamees, Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

Kamel attributed the growth to the development of the mobile phone and internet sectors, stressing the importance of both to the Egyptian economy.

In statements to reporters, he emphasized the need to move forward in technological innovation and entrepreneurship in order to maintain strong rates of growth.

This success is carried forward by programs on human development led by the Information Ministry, the Agency of Technology Industry Development, the Centre of Technological Innovation and the Institute of Information Technology, the minister said.

Al-Khamees expressed optimism that Egypt will continue to advance by joining the International Organization for Knowledge Economy and Enterprise Development and cooperating with its friends, especially the United States.

He praised the efforts of the American University in Cairo, Nile University and others he claimed reinforced the success of the global program on Egyptian entrepreneurship.
