Government plans to increase its investment in the coal sector to up to US$30 billion in five years, according to Investment Minister Ashraf Salman.
During the conference entitled “Egypt 2015”, Salman said that around 30,000 megawatts will be added to the electricity network within the next 10 years. 8,000 megawatts will be generated through coal, another 8,000 megawatts through renewables, while 12,000 megawatts will com from new energy sources. Currently, 60 percent of the energy is produced with the use of traditional sources, according to the minister.
Salman added the government hopes to increase its reliance on coal not only as a source of energy, but also in other industries. Mnistries of environment, electricity and investments are currenty working to preserve the internationally-recognized standards.
