During his current visit to Germany, Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid said his position on the bribery cases involving German companies Daimler-Benz and Ferrostaal remained unchanged. “If Egyptian officials took bribes to facilitate certain businesses, they will be brought to account,” he said.
“There is corruption all over the world,” the minister added. “The question is what steps should be taken to deter it.”
During his visit, Rachid met with Bavarian Federal and European Affairs Minister Emilia Mueller and invited her to visit Egypt to discuss the formation of a special fund for solar- and wind-energy projects.
Rachid also met with German Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle, who said in press statements after the meeting that ongoing economic cooperation between Egypt and Germany was “positive.”
The ministers also discussed the German DESERTRC project, which aims to carry out electricity generation projects in North Africa’s Western Sahara region for export to Europe.
