Minister: AMCOW plays important role in shaping sanitation management agenda in Africa

The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) contributes to providing strategic guidance towards shaping a safe sanitation and hygiene management agenda in Africa, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Hani Sweilem told a high-level ministerial session held within the 7th Africa Sanitation Conference.

Sweilem, who also acts as the AMCOW chairman, added that the council also helps in shaping a safe sanitation and hygiene management agenda in the continent.

Information from Member States’ self-assessments indicates that more than 800 million people in Africa lack access to safely managed sanitation, while nearly 430 million people lack access to safe water, the minister said.

Achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals will require more investments. At least $66 billion annually is needed in infrastructure to ensure access to water and sanitation, he added.
