Millions converge on Mecca

Millions of Muslim pilgrims from the world over were performing hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Pilgrims collectively performed morning prayers led by an imam at the Great Mosque, Masjid al-Haram.

Sunday is the last day of the pilgrimage, celebrated with the Eid al-Adha holiday. Muslims will travel to an open plain called Muzdalifa, between Arafat and Mina, to collect pebbles and throw them at pillars representing Satan.

Around 2.5 million to 3 million pilgrims are believed to be in Mecca to perform hajj, a duty that all able-bodied Muslims must undertake at least once in their lifetime.
