A military source said Thursday that anyone wearing a military or police uniform without official authorization will be jailed.
The announcement comes after videos cropped up online over the past two days featuring a retired military officer pledging, along with some of his retired colleagues, to join Tahrir Square protests in their military uniforms.
The officer, who called himself former Air Force Captain Sherif Othman, said he and his colleagues would take part in the planned “Friday of Purging” protest to call for the resignation of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
Othman accused council leaders of corruption and following in the footsteps of ousted President Hosni Mubarak. He said the council must step down to keep Egypt's revolution in tact.
Recent media reports have suggested the military council has struck a deal with Mubarak, by which the former president agreed to resign in exchange for freedom from prosecution. The Supreme Council of Armed Forces has denied making any such deals with the former regime and insisted it has worked for Egypt’s benefit.
