A Facebook fan page for the spokesperson of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has been shut down, indicating the creator of the page’s rejection of the language the military official used in a statement on behalf of the ruling council.
Administrators for the unofficial page dedicated to Major General Mohsen al-Fangary, deputy defense minister and spokesperson for the SCAF, announced that the page would close shortly after Fangary's statement aired on state-run television.
The SCAF statement said that protests and strikes that deviate from what it deems to be the correct path hinder the interests of the country and its citizens.
In the speech, Fangary made threatening gestures by waving his hands and warned against moves that could destabilize the country. He also warned against circulating what he described as "rumors and false news".
Shortly after the statement aired, the Facebook page’s administrators wrote, “This page will be deactivated shortly,” considering that the statement had included threatening language.
The page currently does not exist.
Facebook users created the page, which included around 98,000 fans, after Fangary performed a military salute for the 25 January revolution martyrs during the third statement issued by the SCAF after former President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation.
Fangary has delivered six statements on behalf of the ruling military council since it assumed power on 11 February.
