The military council has not yet responded to a suggestion to shorten elections to the Shura Council, Egypt’s upper house of parliament, and authorize main polling stations to count the votes, said Abdel Moez Ibrahim, head of the high elections commission.
“This needs new legislation,” Ibrahim said
He also said that the commission held several meetings to make sure mistakes over the last two phases of parliamentary elections are avoided.
“Judges supervising the polling stations would serve as liaisons between the armed forces and the police,” he explained. “There would also be a female supervisor to identify female voters who wear face-veils.”
About 14 million citizens are eligible to vote in the remaining nine governorates during the final phase of elections expected to conclude by mid-January.
