Microbus drivers go on partial strike

Microbus drivers went on a partial strike Tuesday in Cairo and Giza to call for the cancellation of “hefty fines” imposed on them last year.

The drivers also called for abolishing charges on private mass transportation collected by municipal councils.

Microbus drivers had gone on an unsuccessful partial strike on 11-12 September and were on a full-fledged strike last Tuesday.

The Microbus Drivers Syndicate, which is being formed, had announced the organization of a general strike on Tuesday in greater Cairo to call for the implementation of a court ruling issued in 2008 which called for abolishing charges levied by municipal councils.

The strike led to overcrowding, and commuters were forced to take other means of transportation. Some public transportation buses took microbus routes.

Cairo Governor Osama Kamal said he would contact Minister of Justice Ahmed Mekky and Public Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud to examine the complaints made by microbus drivers and reach a compromise.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the governor added that studies are currently being conducted to establish a transportation system where the diverse means of transportation complement each other.
